Spaces selling out at Flare Markets

We are pleased to say that the events for this year at the Tithe Barn and the Chapel at York Cemetery are both full and there will be an exciting mix of work for sale at each event. We still have a few spaces left at Ripley Town Hall on November 30th and would particularly like to hear from printmakers, ceramicists or painters who would like to book a space.

We will be announcing the full list of artists and makers exhibiting with us at the beginning of October.

Unusual visitors arrive in York to promote Flare

Two paper mache figures (Tilly and Ruby) arrived in York this week to promote the next Flare contemporary art and craft market in the Guildhall on December 6th. They had a great day taking in in all the local sights and received a warm welcome from staff and visitors at several of York's attractions including The Railway Museum, The Theatre Royal, Miller's Yard and York Art Gallery. Head's turned and smiles quickly followed wherever these quirky girls went and they are now sat on bar stools in the upper foyer of the Theatre Royal where they were invited to stay until they move to the Guildhall.

Jon Cove, the artist behind these amazing creations is profoundly deaf and has a visual impairment, speaking through a sign interpreter he said he was thrilled to hear that his work had caused such a stir in York. Jon says, "I use my hands to feel their head and hair, and this helps me see what they look like. This helps me to create my sculptures, which I often base on people I know, or people who work with me."

Jon's work will be on show and for sale along with other work by over 30 other local artists and makers at the Flare Contemporary Art and Craft Market at the Guildhall, St Helen's Square, York on Thursday Dec 6th, 11am - 8pm. Entrance to the event is free.

The weather might have been miserable but stall holders and visitors alike had a great day at the recent Flare contemporary art and craft market at the Tithe Barn in Poppleton.

A big thank you to everyone who took part and we look forward to seeing you again at the Guildhall on Dec 6th or at one of next years events.......watch this space!

About Flare
Flare was started by four artists and makers from Yorkshire who were struggling to find suitable craft fairs to sell their work. Flare offers contemporary artists and makers an exciting and affordable opportunity to showcase and sell their work at inspiring and lively craft markets. Flare markets are held in unique venues that provide the ideal setting for showing a refreshing variety of innovative art and craft and a relaxing atmosphere for shoppers to browse and purchase new and exciting work.

We aim to have a broad range of work for sale at our events so that shoppers have a wide choice to select from. This also means that artists and makers working in a particular style or media have little or no competition at Flare markets.

Flare markets are well advertised with leaflets and posters distributed widely, extensive e-marketing, comprehensive
publicity with local press and media and a growing mailing list of interested customers. Flare aims to promote and celebrate work produced by artists and makers and to encourage people to value and purchase individually made items.

The Tithe Barn, Poppleton, York 10am—4pm
The 16th Century Tithe Barn has a unique ambience and is a beautiful setting for a market. Poppleton is situated close to the York outer ring road and the A59 York to Harrogate road. It is easily accessible by car, bus, train and cycle. As this is a small venue we recommend you book early to guarantee a space. Light refreshments are available.

Cost of space £30 (there are a limited number of tables available at this venue. They will be allocated on a ‘first come first served’ basis at time of booking.)
Setting up 8—9.30am
Taking down 4—5.30pm
Free parking available.

The Guildhall, York 11am—8pm
The 15th Century Guildhall is situated on Coney Street, the
busiest shopping street in the centre of York. This beautiful stone building is a fantastic setting for a vibrant Christmas market. On Thursday 6th December it will be late night shopping in York, bustling with tourists and Christmas shoppers.

Cost of space £50 (there are a limited number of tables available at this venue. They will be allocated on a ‘first come first served’ basis at time of booking.)
Setting up 9—10.30am
Taking down 8—9pm
Please note that there is no parking at the Guildhall and access for vehicles to St Helen’s Square is not permitted between 11am and 4pm. There are several pay and display car parks in York—the nearest long stay car park is Marygate which is just a short walk away through the Museum Gardens. There are excellent park and ride services from Rawcliffe Bar, Designer Outlet, Askham Bar, Monks Cross and Grimston Bar.
